Birth Plan for Michael
Due March 26, 1996

Written by John and Julie , his parents.

This birth plan is for our son, Joseph, who has been diagnosed with anencephaly. After receiving this news in November, we decided to switch to a Columbus doctor. One of the reasons for this switch was our desire to deliver at St. Ann's. We had heard such wonderful reports from different friends about your hospital. After meeting with Tina Null, we know we have made the right choice; we have great confidence in your nursing staff. We hope this birth plan is a help to you.

  1. We have asked our Lamaze instructor, Linda, to videotape the birth. She is going, however, on vacation around the time we're due. If she cannot videotape the birth, is it possible for the technician to be available to do this.

  2. We ask that our son be referred to as Joseph.

  3. We would like a nurse/technician to give the family members who are waiting updates during the labor.

  4. We prefer no fetal monitoring, but Julie would like to be monitored.

  5. John would like to cut the cord.

  6. After Joseph is born, we'd like a dedication to be performed by our pastor as soon as possible with both sets of grandparents in the room as well. The grandparents are Jean and Harold and Betty and Jerry. If possible we'd like Linda or the technician to videotape this.
Note: As Tina and I discussed, the doctor and nurses will clean up Julie as much as necessary, knowing time is of the essence. After the dedication the pastor and grandparents will leave the room and the doctor will finish with Julie. After the dedication and clean up, we'd like Kate to meet her brother.

  7. If the diagnosis is correct and Joseph is anencephalic, we desire only comfort measures for him.

  8. John and Julie would like to bathe Joseph.

  9. We will wait and see when it comes to visitors.

  10. We would like Joseph with us at all times.

  11. Keepsakes requested.

    crib card blood type
    blanket hand prints
    hats foot prints
    newborn picture lock of hair
    bracelet

  12. John would like to spend the night in Julie's room.
